*Imaginary trumpet fanfare*
Hear ye, hear ye! In just fourteen days’ time, my newest novel, The Beautiful Game, (co-written with the talented Vanessa Lanang) will make its debut into the world! And it’s going to be pretty fun, if I don’t say so myself.
In honor of the occasion, I thought I’d share seven fun facts about the book. And here they are!
Fun Facts (in no particular order):
The picture above is NOT what Joey would look like, but you can only do so much with free Canva, you know?
Vanessa and I rewrote The Beautiful Game about four times before we “got it right.” (This is mostly my fault. I have to rewrite a lot, lol.) We changed things like steam level, emotional focus, timeline, and even event sequence.
Related to Fun Fact #2, we have about 30K words of cut bonus scenes that may or may not ever see the light of day. (I sort of hope they do! Some of the scenes are super funny, and others are… practically X-rated, lol.)
The theme song for The Beautiful Game is “Cardigan” by Taylor Swift.
Joey is based on a real-life soccer player from Pittsburgh’s Riverhounds. However, we changed his ethnicity from the real-life player’s Brazilian background to Filipino since Vanessa is Fil-Am and we like to write in our lanes. (This is also why Vera is Latin-American, since that’s my lane, lol.)
There is so much food talked about in The Beautiful Game that you could prepare a whole party menu with nothing but things mentioned in the book. (As a matter of fact, I am working on a book club guide that includes such a menu!)
We have debated writing spin-off books featuring some of the more prominent side characters, but of course, this can only happen if The Beautiful Game sells well.
And with that, I think it’s the perfect time for me to remind you to pre-order your copy of The Beautiful Game here!
Ahhhhh, it's 13 days now!
